This practice stems from the Bible and English law. In the Old Testament, Moses was told to train leaders on how to handle disputes and grievances. He then leads us through the history in England in the granting and removing of the right to redress grievances of citizens, and how that has also happened in American history. This constitutional right connects to our current moment in the United States. Barry Farah describes why the right to peaceably address grievances is important to maintain the framework of our nation. He outlines recent events, specifically related to the January 6 convening of Congress to potentially redress the grievances of alleged voter fraud, and how that opportunity was lost due to the introduction of violence in an otherwise peaceable assembly at the U.S. Capitol.

Free to Assemble Peaceably

The right to peaceably assemble was first asserted by the colonists when the British attempted to suppress this right. This eventually led to its incorporation into our Constitution. Barry Farah describes why peaceable assembly is good no matter how distasteful the ideas being promoted. Granting all people the right to share their ideas allows the best ideas to win. Barry Farah also outlines in this episode the recent events at the U.S. Capitol and describes how peaceful protesters were joined by those with a more violent intent. Abdication Leads to Tyranny

Episode #4 – Today on Culture Shift, Barry Farah talks about the balance of power and how it relates to the recent election. 2020 brought with it a huge expansion in government overreach in its allowance of violence, its mandate to force business closures, and response to the evidence of alleged election fraud. The balance of power for the three branches laid out in the Constitution is critical to right these wrongs, and is sadly waning. Today, Barry Farah describes a concept he calls “the tripod.” This concept displays how the executive, legislative, and judicial branches – or departments as Madison refers to them in the Federalist papers – all have individual roles, but are critically interdependent on each other. If one branch oversteps or abdicates their responsibilities, tyranny is inevitable. The 2020 election reveals numerous examples of voting misconduct and if the roles of our government are not upheld, we will never know if the results are an honest representation of who won. The Power of Free Speech

Episode #3 – Today on Culture Shift, Barry talks about the first two freedom rights within the first amendment: the freedom of speech and freedom of the press. When it comes to sharing ideas, the “cancel culture” phenomena has already begun muting our abilities to speak freely. Yet, the power to speak is one of the greatest gifts God gave us, because it’s one of his greatest strengths. When God created everything, he did so not by physical exertion, but by speaking. As humans made in the image of God, we bear that same power. I hope you enjoy today’s episode as we discuss the harm in repressing speech and endorsing dishonest journalism. Without the freedom of speech, we will not only cease to live in a government ordered by the people, but it will remove the God-given power of spreading our own ideas.
